Meet the Governors
I joined the Board in March 2020 after a career in the Further Education sector and was elected Vice Chair in June 2021. I then took on the role of chair in early 2024. I have taught Life Sciences, English and Maths (amongst many other subjects!) before moving into management. I have been fortunate to hold a variety of middle and senior leadership positions, including Head of Teacher Training and Independent Living Skills. I moved to Dorset to take up a post as Deputy Principal (Curriculum and Quality) at Kingston Maurward College. I have been a governor in both the primary and secondary sectors and am now enjoying getting to know special education. As a Governor, my aim is to support the staff and children to the best of my ability and for the school to be the best it can be. I enjoy travel and exploring the beautiful Dorset countryside, as well as looking after our garden, bees and hens. Family time is also very important, particularly spending time with my 4 young grandchildren.
I joined the Board at the end of 2023; this is my first role in a governing body, and I look forward to helping support the school in providing an effective education for all. I moved to Dorset in 1993 to take up an Engineering position with the Ministry of Defence. I then moved into the education sector as a Maths teacher and have worked in a large comprehensive school in Dorchester for 25 years, where I have been fortunate to hold a variety of teaching positions and am currently an Assistant Headteacher.
When I am not working, I am an avid reader and enjoy a round of golf, which I have taken up relatively recently. I also enjoy travel, and try to get back to Scotland to visit family when I can.
I am a retired commercial solicitor, having spent most of my career in the financial services industry. I was a governor of my sons’ secondary school for 13 years, including 3 years as chair of governors. My wife and I live in Weymouth, my wife’s family coming from Portland.
I enjoy watching football and tennis, walking, reading, theatre and cinema.
For the last ten years, I have been running my own company specialising in technical training in the broadcast industry. We deliver training services worldwide for groups with varying skill sets. Before that, I worked on and managed some of the most significant technical projects in the industry with responsibility for big budgets and setting up/running medium-sized support teams.
I am a self-confessed geek and am profoundly dyslexic. I was fortunate to have attended a special needs school that taught me to overcome my challenges. I am offering my education, business and technical experience to help Wyvern.
I love science (especially astronomy), learning, all things technical and sci-fi (like all good geeks).
I joined Wyvern Academy’s board of Governors in 2019, initially as a parent trustee, when my son attended Wyvern, and soon after took on the role as Safeguarding Governor.
I’m also a trustee with Action CP, a national charity that advocates for policy change and greater public, professional and political awareness of issues relating to children with cerebral palsy and their families. My campaign work for them has included lobbying MPs in Westminster and addressing members of both houses of Parliament for the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for cerebral palsy.
As a parent of a child with special needs, I understand what hopes parents have for their children’s education when they start school, and I am glad to be playing a part in ensuring that Wyvern Academy is continually striving to offer the very best to its pupils.
Having grown up in north Dorset, after I qualified as a doctor from St George’s, I returned to the county and settled in Weymouth. I feel very lucky to live on the Jurassic coast; the perfect place to bring up my son. In my spare time I enjoy a number of hobbies – writing children’s stories, folk and acoustic music, and yoga.
