At Wyvern we aim to encourage students to investigate, interpret and respond to the world around them through a broad range of media and techniques. Students are introduced to art and artists from a variety of different cultures and time periods and given space and opportunities to explore materials and processes with appropriate support.
Art and design is a vital part of a child’s development, and the ability to mimic, interpret and express feelings is crucial in all our lives. Creating art and working with different materials also carries a high sensory load which allows SEND pupils to access the curriculum in a broader sense than other subjects.
Art and design are taught in weekly lessons in each class, and are also embedded into daily routines as a sensory and expressive method of understanding for many pupils. Working with their hands, and creating a physical, tangible object which can be touched and felt can help many of our students to process information and respond to stimulus.
We strongly value the importance of the arts as it is fantastic way for our pupils to express themselves in a variety of forms. We are aware of the value of the arts as a whole package and we promote the importance of music, art, dance and drama in every classroom and across each department.
We deliver high quality arts across the school hence ensuring every child and young person has the opportunity to experience the richness of the arts through creative planning and a breadth of engaging resources.
