The gustatory system is the technical name for our sense of taste.

The sense of taste is not just one sense that is located in the mouth, but rather several sensations that are experienced in and around the mouth, smell, texture, and temperature. Once the taste is combined with the smell, the actual “flavour” is produced and interpreted by the brain. Just like our sense of smell, our sense of taste is directly linked to memories and emotions. 

All classes are using the same scent for each weekday. Each scent provides another way of communicating which day of the week we are in. These are presented in circle time with a visual cue and a coloured scarf.

There are five basic qualities of taste that have been described: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and savoury. The smells are chosen, along with the colour of the day, to indicate to the students which day of the week that it is, to provide an additional means of creating links and memories that we do ‘……..’ on this day.
